7 tips for planning a wedding

Congratulations! You’re getting married and now its time for wedding planning!

Planning a wedding is such an exciting time in your life. We’ve put together our top tips to help you plan your dream day!

1. Start early

First things first, we recommend starting your planning early. In order to bag your dream venue, photographer, make up artist etc, planning early is key.  It will also allow you to solve any unexpected issues that might crop up. So how early is early? Well we have brides at GG’s Yard that book with us a good two years in advance!

2. Create your invite list

Before you can stat planning properly, you need to have a good idea of who you want to invite. Sit down together a write list of everyone you want to invite including children. From here, you will know how big a venue you need to find.  Planning your guestlist can be quite difficult and often political but just remember, you are the ones who will be paying them to be there so really think about who goes on to the list!

3. Make a budget

Next up is to make a budget before you spend any money. Some items you’ll need to take into consideration are venue hire, food and drink costs, decorations, wedding dress, the grooms outfit, hair and make-up and all the little extras like confetti and sparklers. All these little extras can easily be overlooked. If you’re thinking of having a wedding at GG’s Yard, we’ve made a cost calculator that gives an approximate cost for our weddings. 4. Don’t forget about accommodation

Once you have your guest list sorted and you start the search for a wedding venue, make sure you keep in mind where all your guests and yourselves will stay.  Rural wedding venues can be beautiful but may not be practical in terms of accommodation and so you may need to consider putting on busses for your guests to the nearest town.  This isn’t the case at Laggan as we offer on-site accommodation for some of your guests. Located just a short walk from our main wedding venue, GG’s Yard, our Sea View Snugs offer relaxation and comfort, plus, your guests will never be too far from the party. To find out more about accommodation at Laggan including our Sea View Snugs, Laggan Behind and Cairnharrow Cottage, click here. What’s more, when you book your wedding with us, you’ll receive a copy of our Bride Book with more accommodation recommendations in the area that are a short car drive away.

5. Book venue visits

Barn wedding venue or hotel or country estate. There are endless options to choose from. Visiting the wedding venue gives you a chance to picture how your day could look but more importantly, an opportunity for you to meet the wedding planning team and ask all the questions you might have.  If you’re not able to visit a venue, ask to see their images and if they have it, a virtual tour. You can view our virtual tour of GG’s Yard wedding venue here. When you visit us, Vicki will show you around but then sit down with you to explain how weddings work at GG’s Yard. You’ll also be able to come back and meet our Executive Chef Jamie to discuss your wedding breakfast.

6. Meet your photographer

Meet your photographer or at least have a call to gauge their style of photography and if it would work with your personalities.  Some photographers include a pre-wedding engagement shoot as part of their package.  Click here for our list of recommended wedding photographers in Dumfries & Galloway. If you like what you see in the image on this post, the photographer is Cameron at Hemera Visuals.

7. Have fun!

Don’t let the wedding planning overwhelm you. It is going to be the best day of your lives and the planning is great fun.  If you are getting married with us at GG’s Yard, our expert team of professionals are on hand for any questions or to bounce back ideas.
