GG's Yard

Laggan Wedding – Steven & Megan

A sunny day in early October saw Steven and Megan get married with us at GG’s Yard.  Steven and Megan were one of our couples who had to change their original plans to suit government restrictions and what a beautiful day it was.  Over to the newlyweds to tell us more about their special day.

Tell us about about yourself…

We’ve been together now just over 6 years, and we got engaged in April 2019 in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy! We have 2 furry children; Bebe the Collie, and Nico the Tabby Cat! We live in a little village called Coylton, just outside of Ayr.

Why did you choose GG’s Yard as your wedding venue?

There were a good few reasons why we chose GGs Yard for our wedding, but we both knew this was the only place for us almost as soon as we arrived! We loved the venue, the setting, the views, the accommodation and the fact that it was a family run business was a big plus for us too.

What was the wedding colour scheme or did you have a theme?

We kept a traditional Scottish theme throughout, with blues, tartan and thistles.

Tell us about the dress and kilt!

Megan: The dress was by St Patrick White One and was one of the first dresses that I tried on. I saw it in the window of a small shop in Prestwick, made an appointment for the next weekend, tried it on, loved it, and bought it the same day! It was an ivory Mermaid Silhouette in crepe with laced cap sleeves and low back.

Steven: I opted for the full highland wear and purchased my kilt from MacGregor & MacDuff in Prestwick. The Tartan was Blue Ramsay with a Lomond Grey Jacket & Waistcoat.

What flowers did you go for?

We went for white roses, thistles and eucalyptus, we opted for natural greens and whites with Scottish twists. The buttonholes followed suit.

What food choice did you go for and why?

We aimed to accommodate for all dietary requirements, and we were offered a large selection for all courses by the venue, and we ended up narrowing it down to a 3 course meal with two options available for both courses. It is worth mentioning that I (Steven) am an incredibly fussy eater, and the staff were more than happy to create a bespoke dinner menu for me to enjoy to ensure I still had a fantastic meal…which I did!

Are there any suppliers you used that you’d like to get a special mention?

Everyone that played a part in making our day perfect could not be faulted!

What was a wedding highlight for you?

We got incredibly lucky with the weather on our wedding day and we were able to hold our wedding ceremony outdoors, which was incredibly scenic and allowed for no one to have to wear a mask!

We both enjoyed a quiet few minutes away in the evening, out on the terrace which allowed us to take a moment together and just enjoy it.

What advice would you give to those writing a speech?

Keep it simple, light-hearted and well balanced! Don’t overthink it and be sincere; and remember to thank all the VIPs! Oh and it’s okay to get emotional!

How did you feel about having a socially distanced wedding?

We’d be lying if we said it was a good thing! Yes it wasn’t what we had envisioned but in the grand scheme of things, it really didn’t have as big of an impact as we’d thought.

What advice would you give to other Brides and Grooms going through planning a wedding?

Try to enjoy it! Yes it can be stressful and emotions can run high at times, but always remember what the end goal is; too get married! It’s your day, invite who you want to invite, and ensure you make choices about your big day to reflect what you really want, not what you think your guests will want!

And how about those planning a wedding during the current pandemic?

I think it’s important to manage your own expectations, you will have to make compromises and some tough decisions that leave you frustrated. But regardless of everything, when the big day arrives, you won’t care about the impact of social distancing, or wearing a mask, it will be the best day ever!

Our last piece of advice is to be patient and understanding with the venue as they are just as frustrated with the restrictions as you are, and truly want every couple to have the most memorable and enjoyable day they can.

Anything else you’d like to say?

I think it’s important to mention just how amazing all the staff were that we dealt leading up to our wedding day, and also throughout our wedding day. There was a lot of uncertainty leading up to our wedding from how many people we could have there, to tables plans, to music and mask wearing however the staff worked alongside us every step of the way to ensure that we were able to have an amazing day whilst working within the guidelines.

A big thank you goes to Vicki, Duncan, Jackie, Julie, Helen, Andrew and Alex for making our day truly amazing!
