Laggan

On nature’s doorstep

When choosing somewhere to stay for a short break, do nature and wildlife ever cross your mind? We describe our Snugs as being situated literally on nature’s doorstep because they are! Simply step out of your Snug front door and you will be surrounded by beautiful Scottish countryside. Amongst the rolling hills, we are blessed to share our home with an abundance of wildlife. Each of our Snugs comes with its own binoculars so you don’t even have to leave your Snug to watch wildlife go past.

For those looking for a weekend away and want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, a trip to Laggan will do just so. The wildlife that surrounds the Snugs will add to the relaxing nature of our home.

So what animals can you expect to find at Laggan?

Red Kites

Dumfries and Galloway is home to the majestic bird of prey the Red Kite.  Saved from extinction, this graceful bird has a reddish-brown body, angled wings and a deeply forked tail.  You can often see Red Kites soaring above our Snugs but for a closer look, why not visit the Galloway Kite Trail.

Hares

If you spot two large bunny like ears with long hind legs, you’ve found our native hares!  At Laggan you’ll be able to spot the Brown Hare; golden-brown in colour with a pale stomach and white tail. Up in our hills, you may be able to spot a Mountain Hare; featuring a grey-brown coat which turns white in winter. Did you know some hares can reach up to speeds of 45mph!

Deer

The Galloway Hills are home to Roe Deer and Red Deer. Behind the Snugs there is a path which leads up into the hills. Head up for a post dinner stroll at dusk and you may be able to spot these magnificent animals.  When you stay in our Snugs, keep an eye out for the majestic Red Deer which has dark auburn fur. The male will have large branching antlers – these animals really are breath-taking to see in their natural environment!

Birds

From sparrows, starlings, swallows, barn owls to barnacle Geese…(the list goes on!), your staycation will involve seeing and hearing many of our bird residents.  With a cup of tea in hand, make yourself cosy in your Snug and enjoy watching our sweet feathered friends flying around during your short break.

Dolphins and Seals

Depending on the season, the Solway Firth occasionally welcomes two dolphin species; Bottlenose Dolphin and Common Dolphin. Duncan’s Dad Kerr spotted a pool just two weeks ago! Over by the islands, you may be able to see two species of seals; Common Seal and Grey Seal.

Farm animals

In addition to wildlife, visitors to Laggan will be able to spot farm animals. Still a working farm today, visitors will be greeted with grazing cattle and sheep amongst our 1,000 acres of hillside land.  In fact, the interior design of the bistro Gather focuses on this farm animal theme as hill farming has been such a large part of Laggan life. You’ll see large prints of the Laggan sheep flocks inside on the wall.

Hetty the cockapoo

Last but absolutely not least, the family cockapoo Hetty is often seen walking around Laggan!
