Top things to do on rainy days in Dumfries & Galloway

It’s certainly been a wet summer but we don’t let the weather dampen our moods! There is so much to see and do in Dumfries and Galloway come rain or shine and so we’ve put together some of our suggestions for places to visit in the area on rainy days!

Broughton house and museum

Broughton House is based in the heart of the coastal town Kirkcudbright and is an 18th century town house.  Originally the home of the Scottish impressionist artist ‘Glasgow Boy, E. A Hornel, the house has become a mecca of art exhibitions.

Visitors can view exhibitions which change throughout the year as well as rare books and treasures from Horne’s collections. The lower ground museum currently exhibits a range of artefacts, photographs and traditional costumers all collected by Hornel during his trips to Japan in 1893 and 1920.

On sunnier days, the gardens are simply stunning.

Crafty distillery

Crafty Distillery is located just outside of Newton Stewart and provides visitors with their award-winning gin distillery tour or an immersive Scotch Whisky tour like no other.  Visitors get to learn about how the products are made and get to try along the way. At the end of the tours you can sit back and enjoy the panoramic views of the Galloway hills.

Cocoabean COMPANY

If you’re looking for ideas to keep the kids entertained during rainy days, a trip to the Cocabean Company is a must. Just a 15 minute drive down the road you’ll be able to smell the chocolate in the air. The Cocoabean Company runs workshops for children and families where guests get can get their hands grubby and make their own chocolate. Afterwards, children can burn their energy at the softplay which is huge!

Kirkcudbright Dark Space Planetarium

Step into a world of science and technology and learn all about space and the galaxies. A trip to the Dark Space Planetarium is a truly immersive experience and suitable for all ages!  Located just down the road in Kirkcudbright, the planetarium is a great day out on rainy days.

The Mill on the fleet

Step outside the doors of The Murray Arms and stroll down to the Mill on the Fleet. A restored cotton mill dating from 1785 which is now an exhibition centre. The restored mill building also features an art gallery, secondhand bookshop, cafe and is the main tourist information point for Gatehouse.

Cinema

Barbie or Oppenheimer? You can’t go wrong with a trip to the cinema, especially on rainy days. The nearest cinema to us is The Cinema in Newton Stewart.

Galloway Activity Centre or Galloway Canyoning

Head to the Galloway Activity Centre or have an adventure with Galloway Canyoning – it doesn’t matter if its raining with these companies!
